A project always comes down to two figures in the end: what it cost, and how long it took. Here are both, with no flattering rounding and with their dates.

Ein Projekt lässt sich am Ende immer auf zwei Zahlen bringen: was es gekostet hat und wie lange es gedauert hat. Hier stehen beide, ohne schmeichelhafte Rundung und mit ihren Daten.

Le total tient en une ligne : 95,02 €, dont les deux tiers pour la machine elle-même, achetée d'occasion cinq ans avant que le programme n'existe.

The total fits on one line: €95.02, two thirds of it for the machine itself, bought second-hand five years before the program existed.

C'est là que le compte devient intéressant. La machine n'a jamais été en panne : elle a simplement attendu qu'un logiciel veuille bien lui parler.

This is where the account gets interesting. The machine was never broken: it simply waited for a piece of software willing to talk to it.

Hier wird die Rechnung interessant. Das Gerät war nie defekt: Es hat einfach darauf gewartet, dass eine Software mit ihm spricht.

1 858 jours d'attente, 5 jours d'écriture. L'attente aura duré 372 fois plus longtemps que le travail — et ce n'est pas le travail qui manquait, c'est quelqu'un avec qui le faire.

1,858 days of waiting, 5 days of writing. The wait lasted 372 times longer than the work — and it was never the work that was missing, it was someone to do it with.

1 858 Tage Warten, 5 Tage Schreiben. Das Warten dauerte 372-mal so lange wie die Arbeit — und es fehlte nie die Arbeit, sondern jemand, mit dem man sie macht.

Rien, et c'est voulu. Le programme est dans le domaine public : il ne se vend pas, ne demande pas de don, n'affiche aucune publicité, ne collecte rien et ne téléphone à personne. Il n'y a ni compte à créer, ni adresse à laisser, ni version payante à découvrir plus tard.

Nothing, and that is deliberate. The program is in the public domain: it is not for sale, asks for no donation, shows no advertising, collects nothing and phones nobody. There is no account to create, no address to leave, no paid version waiting further down the line.

Nichts, und das ist so gewollt. Das Programm ist gemeinfrei: Es wird nicht verkauft, bittet um keine Spende, zeigt keine Werbung, sammelt nichts und telefoniert mit niemandem. Es gibt kein Konto anzulegen, keine Adresse zu hinterlassen, keine kostenpflichtige Fassung weiter hinten.

Le seul retour attendu tient en une phrase : qu'une machine de plus continue d'imprimer, au lieu de finir au rebut parce qu'un fichier de 2012 n'a plus la bonne signature.

The only return expected fits in one sentence: that one more machine keeps printing, instead of being scrapped because a file from 2012 no longer carries the right signature.
